A Chinese proverb beautifully encapsulates the essence of generational responsibility: "One generation plants the trees, and another gets the shade" (ๅไบบ็งๆ ๅไบบไนๅ). As parents, we are the tree planters, building a canopy under which our children can thrive. This shade is not merely physical comfort but the moral and spiritual ideals passed down from one generation to another.
John MacArthur wrote in his book, What the Bible Says About Parenting, "In spiritual terms, we derive shade from our parentsโ and grandparentsโ ethical standards, their perceptions of right and wrong, their sense of moral duty, and above all, their spiritual commitment." MacArthur emphasized that their ideals determined the civilization we inherited, and the ideals we choose today will shape tomorrow's culture for our children.
Troubling Trends in the Family Unit
In recent years, Singapore has witnessed concerning trends in family dynamics. Data reveals the cracks in the traditional roles of parenting and the family structure:
Youth Offenses and Mental Health:
Suicide rates among young people have been on the rise. In 2022 alone, there were 476 suicides in Singapore, the highest number recorded in over a decade. Youths aged 10โ29 accounted for a significant portion, highlighting a growing mental health crisis. (Source: Samaritans of Singapore)
Common offenses among youth include shoplifting, drug-related crimes, and cyberbullying. These point to a lack of emotional regulation, values, and guidance.
Divorce Rates:
Over the past decade, divorce rates have remained consistently high. For example, in 2021, there were 7,890 divorces and annulments, marking an increase of 13.4% from the previous year. This creates fractured families and impacts children emotionally and psychologically. (Source: Department of Statistics, Singapore)
Parenting Challenges:
The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) recently issued new guidelines on childminding to ensure the safety and welfare of children. However, these guidelines underscore the increasing reliance on external caregivers, as parents struggle to balance work and family life.
These trends suggest a dysfunction in the family unit, where parenting is becoming reactive rather than proactive. What is happening to the role of parenting?
Parenthood: A Gift and a Responsibility
It is said that parenthood is Godโs gift to us. Parenting is not supposed to be a burden. It is meant to be a joyโa journey of love, trust, and growth. It requires skillโa craft that requires intentional effort, patience, and love. MacArthur reminds us that success in parenting is not measured by the accomplishments of the child but by the character of the parents. A parentโs role is to lead by example, shaping the environment in which their child grows. How the child is being raised determines what he becomes as an adult.
The Original Design of Parenting
Being a parent means:
Educating and Transmitting Values: Parents are the first teachers, instilling core values such as honesty, respect, and responsibility. This foundation shapes the childโs worldview and future interactions.
Catering to the Physical, Emotional, and Mental Needs of the Child: A well-nurtured child grows into a resilient adult. Parents provide not only food and shelter but also emotional stability and mental stimulation.
Being an Emotional Mirror and Model: Children learn how to handle emotions by observing their parents. Are we teaching them compassion or anger, patience or frustration?
Creating a Safe and Stimulating Family Environment: The family home should be a sanctuary where children feel safe to explore, learn, and grow.
Fostering a Relationship of Love, Trust, and Respect: Healthy parent-child relationships are built on mutual respect and unconditional love.
Rebuilding the Family Unit To counter the dysfunctionality in families today, we must return to these parenting fundamentals. Parenthood is not just about providing materially but also about being presentโemotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
Here are steps we can take:
Prioritize Family Time: Amid busy schedules, dedicate time for meaningful conversations and activities as a family.
Model Healthy Relationships: Resolve conflicts respectfully and show children what a loving partnership looks like.
Seek Help When Needed: Parenting is not meant to be a solo journey. Reach out to family, community, or professional support systems when challenges arise.
Emphasize Values Over Success: Teach children that character is more important than accolades.
Instill Faith and Spirituality: A spiritual foundation provides children with a moral compass and resilience to face lifeโs challenges.
The role of parenting is sacred, and its impact is eternal. Just as our parents planted the trees under which we now sit, let us plant trees of hope, love, and virtue for our children. The shade we provide today will shelter not just the next generation but many generations to come. ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ช๐ฒ๐น๐น
